Making Lip Balm

Making lip balm is not too complicated. You do not need a lot of fancy tools. If you enjoy cooking, making lip balm won’t be too difficult. However we did find that it took some experimenting to get just the right mix. It is harder than you think to keep consistency from batch to batch.

The ingredients we use consists of our own beeswax, all natural coconut oil and special flavor oils. The beeswax we use come from our own hives we have in our yard. The coconut oil is 100% pure organic coconut oil, it is non-hydrogenated, non-GMO with 0 trans fat. All flavors used are Vegan, non-GMO, soy-free, gluten free, alcohol free & cruelty free.

Making Lip Balm - Our Process!

Mixing and melting all the ingredients together can be a messy affair. Especially shredding the beeswax. We use a cheese grader and shave all the beeswax by hand. It always seems to get everywhere. Melting the mixture to the proper temperature is very important. You don’t want to over-cook it and if it is too cool the texture will be off. The tools used are simple but need to specific, metal and porcelain implements are the easiest to work with and clean.

After the mixture is all melted it is removed from the heat. We let it sit for a few minutes before adding the flavor oils. After which we are ready to pour the batch into the tray. We usually cover the tray with plastic wrap and let it sit over night.

Before removing the tubes the excess lip balm is scrapped off the top of the tray. This excess lip balm can be added to the next batch of the same flavor. Or it can be melted again and poured into smaller containers and used as samples.

With the tray scraped of the excess lip balm the tubes need to be removed from the pouring tray. Sometimes the tubes need a little cleanup before the caps can be installed. With the caps on the last step is adding the label and the shrink wrap. The pouring try can make up to 50 tubes of lip balm at a time. However if you are careful and accurate with your pouring you can make as few as 10 or 11 tubes. All that is left to do now is enjoy the fruits of your labor!
